THE SEARCH FOR CHAMETZ – THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2022
A formal search for leaven (bedikat chametz) is conducted the night before Pesach. This symbolizes the final removal of leaven (chametz) from the home. Before the search, it is customary to deposit small pieces of bread (ten pieces, according to kabbalistic lore) in strategic places so the inspection should have a purpose. It is traditionally carried out by candlelight, with a feather and a wooden spoon to collect the chametz. All this is set aside until morning. Why do we use a candle? “The spirit of man is the lamp of God, searching all the inward parts.”

MECHIRAT CHAMETZ (SELLING OF CHAMETZ) PASSOVER 5782
The Bible instructs that in observing Pesach, all leaven must be removed from one’s home. Life conditions make it impossible to literally fulfill this Biblical edict, and rabbinic authorities instituted a legal fiction: one transfers his chametz to the rabbi, who in turn sells it to a non-Jew. It is traditional at Pesach-time to give Ma’ot Chitim – tzedakah to help feed the hungry. Contributions via checks made out to B’nai Torah with ‘Sale of Chametz’ in the memo or online at www.btcboca.org/chametz will be donated to The Jacobson Family Food Pantry in cooperation with The Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Service.
