THE SEARCH FOR CHAMETZ – THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2025

A formal search for leaven (Bedikat Chametz) is conducted the night before Pesach. This symbolizes the final removal of any forbidden products for Pesach. Before the search, it is customary to deposit small pieces of bread (ten pieces, according to kabbalistic lore) in strategic places so the inspection should have a purpose. It is traditionally carried out by candlelight, with a feather and a wooden spoon to collect them. All this is set aside until the morning. Why do we use a candle? “The spirit of man is the lamp of God, searching all the inward parts.”(Proverbs 20:27)

MECHIRAT CHAMETZ (SELLING OF CHAMETZ) PASSOVER 5785

The Bible instructs that in observing Pesach, all leaven must be removed from one’s home, but after special considerations, rabbinic authorities instituted a legal fiction: to appoint the rabbi as your agent, transfer the Chametz to the rabbi, who in turn sells it to a non-Jew. And to fulfill the Mitzvah of Ma’ot Chitim – tzedakah to help feed the hungry, we make a donation at the time of selling the Chametz. Contributions via checks made out to B’nai Torah with ‘Sale of Chametz’ in the memo or online (CLICK HERE) will be donated to The Jacobson Family Food Pantry in cooperation with The Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services.

SIYUM BECHOROT – SERVICE FOR FIRST-BORNS

Thursday, April 10 (8 am Services)
Commemorate the fact that the firstborn children of Israel were spared the fate of the Egyptians who were smitten during the tenth plague. The first-born of each Jewish family is commanded to fast on the day preceding Passover. However, if the first-born participates in a Seudat Mitzvah, which is always after the conclusion of a study session, he/she is exempt from fasting. First-born (and those who are not) are invited to participate in this service and study session.
