SUMMARY:The Challenge of Peacemaking from the Roots Up - A conversation with Rabbi Emeritus David Steinhardt and Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nRabbi Emeritus David Steinhardt will be in conversation with Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger\, co-founder of Roots\, a joint Israeli-Palestinian grassroots initiative based in the West Bank. It brings local Israelis and Palestinians together for dialogue\, relationship-building\, nonviolence\, and mutual recognition.\n\nIN-PERSON at B’nai Torah Congregation\nFREE for B’nai Torah members and  Guests \n\nClick here to register\n \n\nRabbi Hanan Schlesinger is an Orthodox rabbi and teacher who has been profoundly transformed by his encounters with Palestinians and the Palestinian People beginning in late 2013. Originally hailing from New York\, Rav Hanan immigrated to Israel on his own at the age of 20 and has lived in Alon Shvut\, Gush Etzion\, for 40 years. He spent over 10 years in advanced Jewish study\, primarily at the Har Etzion College of Jewish Studies and in the M.A. program of the Dept. of Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew University. In early 2014\, Ali Abu Awwad and an Israeli partner Shaul Judelman\, together with Rav Hanan and other Israelis and Palestinians\, founded Roots/Judur/Shorashim. Rav Hanan currently serves as its Director of International Relations. He also is the founder of the American Friends of Roots\, a multi-faith organization dedicated to supporting the work of Roots/Shorashim/Judur. Rav Hanan frequently speaks in the USA together with one of his Palestinian partner about the amazing work that Roots/Shorashim/Judur is doing in Judea/Palestine. \nRabbi Schlesinger is a member of the Rabbinical Council of America and the International Rabbinic Fellowship\, as well as Beit Hillel\, an Israeli rabbinical association. He is a Rabbis Without Borders fellow\, and was honored in 2013 and again in 2014 as the Memnosyne Institute Interfaith Scholar. His website is ravhanan.org \n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with Dr. Abraham Hamaoui - Expulsion of Jews from Arab-ruled Lands
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The lecture highlights the expulsion of Jews from Arab-ruled lands—including Morocco\, Algeria\, Tunisia\, Libya\, Egypt\, Sudan\, Lebanon\, Syria\, and Iraq—during the 1950s and 1960s. More than 800\,000 Jews were forced to flee or were expelled\, ending communities that had existed for centuries\, and in some cases for over two millennia\, while receiving no international recognition or assistance. Despite its limited resources as a young state\, Israel welcomed many of the refugees\, providing transportation\, shelter\, and opportunities to rebuild their lives. \n\nLunch & Learn \nTuesdays at 12:00 pm \n\nIN-PERSON at B’nai Torah Congregation and Zoom*\nFree for B’nai Torah Members\, $10 Guests \n\nClick here to register \n\n*Lunch & Learn classes are designed to be in person but we offer a virtual option as courtesy for\nthose that cannot attend in person. SUMMARY:The Book of Job - Rabbi Howard Shub
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nWhy do bad things happen to good people? That timeless question\, made famous by Rabbi Harold Kushner’s best-selling book\, has challenged humanity for centuries. How do we relate to God during times of personal or national tragedy? How do we reconcile our belief in a loving and compassionate God with suffering that seems to defy our understanding? And where does Satan fit into this picture? The Book of Job explores these enduring questions.\n\nZOOM\nFREE for B’nai Torah members | $36 for guests \n\nClick here to register\n \n\nRabbi Howard Shub is a first-generation Canadian Jew born in Toronto.  Raised in a traditional Jewish home where Yiddish was spoken as easily as English\, his Jewish identity was nurtured from an early age through family\, school\, and a Labour Zionist summer camp.He earned his undergraduate degree from Yeshiva University in New York and later completed an M.A. in Contemporary Jewish Studies\, specialising in modern Jewish history\, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After several years in Israel\, he spent five years in Australia; first as Hillel Director in Melbourne\, and then in an unexpected role as a probation and parole officer working in a maximum security prison. Returning to North America\, Rabbi Howard pursued his true calling and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York in 1988. For nearly 40 years\, he served as a congregational rabbi\, retiring in June 2023\, only to return to a part-time pulpit and\, most recently\, as interim rabbi of the synagogue where he served for 23 years. He continues to teach Jewish topics across Florida and serves as mashgiach (kosher supervisor) at the only kosher deli in the area. \n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
